Carmel Olefins will combine green waste in the production of polymers for the plastics industry

The Zen Group and UBQ Materials have signed an agreement to integrate material from recycled waste, within a reduced-carbon product line for the plastics industry in Israel and Europe.

Carmel Olefins, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Zen Group and the only manufacturer in Israel of polymers for the plastics industry in Israel, has signed a supply agreement with UBQ Materials, for the supply of thermoplastic, environmentally friendly material based on biological components. The material will be incorporated at the beginning of the supply chain and will allow Carmel Olefins to supply a reduced-carbon material to the plastics industry. The development of the reduced-carbon footprint product family is carried out in collaboration with Ducor Petrochemicals, a subsidiary of Carmel Olefins in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

UBQ Materials is an Israeli company that turns municipal waste, intended for landfill, into UBQTM, an environmentally friendly thermoplastic material with a negative hydrocarbon footprint that can be combined with traditional polymers. The initial quantities of UBQTM will be supplied by UBQ’s production facility in Tze’elim, and will then be supplied annually up to ten thousand tonnes from the company’s Dutch plant, which will start operating in the last quarter of 2022.

UBQTM’s thermoplastic materials will be integrated into the development of Carmel Olefins and its subsidiary Dokor in a special polypropylene production “Eco CAPILENE ®” – which provides its customers with materials with a reduced and recyclable hydrocarbon footprint.

Malachi Alper, CEO"To the Zen Group: "The agreement is another step towards the realization of the strategic plan we have presented and the expansion of the advanced and upcycled polymer portfolio that we provide to the polymer industry and open up more innovative and environmentally friendly options. As part of the Zen Group’s new strategy presented last July, Zen set a target of reaching 15% green polymers by 2025 and 30% green polymers by 2030."

Tattoo Biggio, Founder and CEO"To a joint of UBQ Materials: "UBQ has so far collaborated with brands and manufacturers of final products. The UBQ combination ™ In the polymer production phase, not only expands the distribution of the material across the supply chain but opens doors to new customers and new applications".

Assaf Almagor, VP"To the Bazan Group and the director of the Ulpin level: "Through the development of our research and development center in Haifa, we can help our customers today meet Hao’s sustainable development goals."M (SDG) by supplying polymers with a reduced carbon footprint and in addition reduces waste dumping. Zen supplies the global polypropylene market with more than 500,000 tons per year, and the combination of UBQTM will improve the environmental profile of our products and accelerate the industry’s transition to greener initiatives.

The Zen Group is the largest refining and petrochemicals complex in Israel and one of the leading energy groups in the region. The Zen refinery has a high level of complexity and has a variety of advanced facilities. The refining field provides a range of quality products for industrial use for transportation, private consumption, agriculture and infrastructure alongside aromatic products through Gadiv Petrochemical Industries Ltd."M, a wholly owned subsidiary of Zen. In addition, the Zen Group manufactures polymer products using Carmel Olefins, and Ducor, located in the heart of the Port of Rotterdam, are both wholly owned subsidiaries. Zen has been traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange since February 2007 and is included in the Tel Aviv 125 Index.

UBQ Materials Ltd has developed advanced, patented conversion technology for the world’s first thermoplastic material based on biological material (UBQ ™). The material is made entirely of unsorted household waste; This is a revolutionary measure to reduce the landfill of solid municipal waste and turn it into a sustainable alternative to oil-based plastics. UBQ, which has received B Corp certification, recently won the 2020 Future of Plastics Award as well as the Quality Innovation Awards. UBQ’s clients include the global retail solutions provider Mainetti, Daimler – the maker of Mercedes and Arcos Dorados, the world’s largest franchisee of McDonald’s restaurants throughout Latin America.
