Twenty-five deaths have been recorded due to an extreme heat wave that has been going on since the end of March in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, the highest number in the last five years, Reuters reported.
Scientists have linked the early onset of the unusually hot summer to climate change, saying more than a billion people in neighboring India and Pakistan are somehow vulnerable to the extreme heat.
With monsoon rains expected to fall only next month and more frequent power outages in some parts of India, even households that can afford air conditioners will have some respite from the heavy heat over the coming weeks. Many of the deaths in Maharashtra have occurred in the more rural areas of the richest country in India.
India is the second largest wheat producer in the world, but the heavy heat is expected to reduce this year’s crop, after five consecutive years of peak crop.
