American singer and rapper Aaron Carter was found this morning (Saturday) dead in his bathtub at his home in Lancaster, California. He was only 34 years old when he died.

He was also the younger brother of Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys.

Representatives of his team confirmed his death: "Right now it’s a really bad time, we’re trying to understand what happened and the reason for it".

The TMZ website reported that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene around 11 a.m. local time after receiving a report of a drowning.

Carter began his career as a child opening for his older brother’s Backstreet Boys at several concerts. He then embarked on a successful solo career.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, he sold millions of copies of his four albums, the first of which came out when he was just nine years old.

His second album, Aaron’s Party (Come Get It), was released in 2000 and went triple platinum.

As he got older, Carter moved into rap, and also appeared in Broadway musicals and the American TV show Dancing with the Stars.

However, he experienced many difficulties later in his career and in his private life. He battled drug addictions, went to rehab and declared bankruptcy in 2013 with millions of dollars in debt.

He also had several run-ins with law enforcement for drug possession and reckless driving.

Earlier this year he told the Daily Mail: "I’m not what some people try to paint me as […] If someone wants to call me a train wreck, well, I’ve been a train that has been wrecked several times and derailed due to many different things.".

He left behind one child, Prince, still an infant.
