For the first time, the FDA approved: lab-grown meat is safe to eat

Lab-grown meat received today (Wednesday) for the first time the safety seal of the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The decision ruled that lab-grown chicken bred by Upside Foods is safe to eat, although it has not yet been approved for sale.

Upside Foods uses animal cell culture technology to take living cells from chickens and grows these cells in a controlled environment to produce food from animal cells instead of using traditional slaughterhouse methods.

Although there are several companies – Mosa Meat, Memphis Meats, Aleph Farms and Meatable – working on cultured food technology, lab-grown meat in any form has not yet been available for sale or consumption in the US."B.

The company stated: "Today we are one step closer to your dinner tables as Upside Foods becomes the first company in the world to receive the green light from the US Food and Drug Administration".

Despite these things, central approvals are still needed before the cultured meat can be stored in US containers"B, mainly from the US Department of Agriculture.

The FDA stated: "In addition to meeting FDA requirements, including facility registration for the cell culture portion of the process, the company will need an inspection grant from the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service for the manufacturing plant ".

The decision is a positive sign for the growing number of US lab-grown meat producers"B. The FDA shared that it is willing to work with additional companies developing food and manufacturing processes from animal cells. Proponents and producers of lab-grown meat say it ultimately means cleaner, drug-free and cruelty-free meat. Lab-grown meat has already been approved for sale and consumption in other countries, including Singapore.
