The Central District Police arrested four football fans for questioning this evening (Monday) on suspicion of attacking and injuring six police officers during a public order violation outside the Netanya stadium. This was during the football Premier League game between Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Netanya.

The police stated that during the game one of the ushers noticed a masked fan standing on the railing of the stands and after refusing to obey the instructions, the fan attacked the security guard and threw a chair at a policeman who was hit in the head, and accordingly the fan was arrested. In response, hundreds of fans began rioting outside the stadium, blocking traffic and throwing glass bottles, fences, smoke grenades, etc. at the police officers, putting their lives at real risk, along with chants of hatred and refusing to obey their instructions.

The commander of the police force on the spot announced to the fans to disperse and open the road to traffic, when they refused, the police pushed the fans towards the sidewalk, using cavalry and dispersal measures outside the stadium only. As mentioned, the police arrested four fans for questioning and as necessary more will be arrested at the end of the examination of the documentation.

The police stated that "We take seriously attacks on police officers and displays of violence on the fields, on the part of those who try to turn a cultural sports event into a battleground, and we will exhaust the full severity of justice with those involved".
