President Herzog met with Anthony Blinken: "Our solidarity with Israel is strong"

President Yitzhak Herzog met for a political working meeting this evening (Monday) with the Secretary of State of the United States, Anthony Blinken. This is their fourth meeting since the beginning of the presidency of the country’s president.

First, the two met for a one-on-one meeting, after which they moved to an extended meeting with the participation of the parties’ delegations.

State President Yitzhak Herzog at the beginning of the meeting: "I saw your comment regarding the internal situation in Israel, and of course the constitutional debate that was created in the Israeli public, a debate that I am working hard to resolve or lead to a path of internal dialogue. You are right, this is an issue that requires broad agreement, and it is an issue that many democratic countries are discussing".

He continued: "We are a country with a vibrant democracy. As you said a few days ago, democracy is vibrant, very vibrant, and I am very proud of the Israelis who are engaged in this debate, from any place, and for expressing their opinion. It’s very important to us, but at the end of the day, we have to solve our problems in a friendly and internal way, as societies and nations should do, and this is my main concern these days".

Herzog added: "There are many bilateral issues at stake. The United States is our closest ally. Our ties with the USA"B Very strong, I would say they transcend any political controversy. It is a psychological and emotional matter. We had the honor of hosting President Joe Biden just a few months ago and I was also honored to visit him, and I hope we can continue to develop the relationship in so many other areas together. Thank you very much for coming to Jerusalem".

US Secretary of State"B, Anthony Blinken, said: "Thank you President, it is always a great pleasure for me to be here with you, I greatly appreciate the partnership and also the friendship between us. I would like to repeat our solidarity again at this difficult moment after the horrible terrorist attack that took place a few days ago, and what makes it even more horrible, if there is such a thing, is the fact that it happened outside a synagogue and targeted people who were leaving a place of prayer. You know our firm solidarity with Israel, with all the people of Israel, when it comes to dealing with terrorism and we stand with you as always in this matter".

He continued: "I had very good conversations with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and it is a special pleasure to talk with you, and I will mention how much we appreciate your leadership, Mr. President, the clarity of your voice when it comes to reducing the tensions here between the communities and between the sectors, and the clarity of your voice when it comes to finding a good way to build consensus on the question of reform the judiciary, and of course also your voice and your vision on various issues that we face as steadfast allies and as steadfast partners. So I really welcome the opportunity to be here with you, and we have a lot to talk about".
