About two weeks ago, the host and singer shared a video of him playing the “Phantom” drum, a unique musical percussion instrument, while singing the well-known poem “Shalom Aleichem”. The video went viral, with over two million views and tens of thousands of shares and covers that took over the web. A particularly exciting moment was recorded last week when Guy took the stage of the Big Brother Studio, and in the background his rendition of “Angels of Peace” began to play and the audience sang along with him at the top of their lungs, which also became a viral video. Now, Zu-Eretz is releasing his version of the song, with which he will also perform in his upcoming show “Ladino and Piot from Abba” on Friday 07/28- at the Tel Aviv Culture Hall.
“Shalom Aleichem” is a poem whose author is unknown, and which probably originates in the North African Kabbalists of the 17th century. The expressions “servant angels” and “angels of peace” appeared for the first time in the well-known Kabbalistic composition, the Zohar. The melody that is known today, the one that Zuz-Eretz performs in the video and the one that is known to most of the people of Israel, is much more modern: its author is the cantor and composer Israel Goldfarb, who was the cantor of the Conservative synagogue Congregation Beit Yisrael Anshi Emet.
Guy Zo-Eretz: “The piyots are the background music of my life, from childhood with my grandparents, Fridays at home, Shabbat evenings on the island with the Shesarot team. They make me feel at home. I did not imagine that my performance would carry so many people after it, something in the unique melody and sounds of the Phantom touched so many hearts and connected them together. Seeing the many young people singing it along with me was both chilling and powerful”
Guy Zou-Artez is a musician, actor and TV presenter. In 2012, he released two joint albums with his brother Roi Zo-Eretz called “Ladino and Piot from Beit Abba”, which contains Ladino songs alongside Piot in the style of Libyan Judaism. This month they return to the stage with the familiar songs and new arrangements, including the arrangement of “Shalom Aleichem” on 28.07 – at the Culture Hall in Bata, and the Phantom will also be there.
