The video, recently circulated again on social media, shows a horrifying comparison between a pair of healthy, bright red lungs, and the coal-black lungs of a smoker. When you press lightly on the lungs, you can see that the healthy lung is flexible and restores its original shape, while the damaged lung is hard and full of clots and defects that prevent it from returning to its natural shape.

When the smoker's lungs are manually inflated, the nurse can be heard in the background explaining: “These lungs are COPD lungs (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), cancerous lungs. The flexibility is gone. They stretch but immediately afterwards go back because there is nothing to help keep the air inside.” In this way, the experiment illustrates the difficulty of smokers to breathe freely and often even suffer from the development of emphysema.

On the other hand, the healthy lung inflates properly during inhalation and allows a slow exit of the air during the exhalation phase – an indication of normal activity and successful oxygen exchange. When you examine the damaged lung of the smoker, you can see that there are parts that are not swollen at all due to the scars and damage from smoking, which affects the respiratory function.

The video goes on to indicate the serious risks that smoking poses to health – lung cancer, cancers in other systems, lung diseases, damage to fertility and sperm, accelerated aging of the body and brain, and cardiovascular diseases.

In the advanced stages of emphysema there is dependence on medical oxygen, and the disease can cause death. It is a serious and fatal lung disease that can be prevented by avoiding smoking.

Experts warn that anyone who chooses to reach for a cigarette is putting himself in great danger. Smoking causes a series of deadly diseases such as heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, COPD and more. Data show that smokers are 4 times more likely to suffer from chronic respiratory diseases.

The video mentions that smoking causes about 90% of deaths from lung cancer, about 80% of deaths from COPD and 17% of deaths from heart disease. Studies even show that smokers die on average 10 years before non-smokers.

Heller's shocking video is a poignant reminder of the irreversible damage that smoking causes to the body, and is a “wake-up call” to all smokers to quit while they can.

Over time, the health benefits of quitting smoking only increase. After three months, there is a marked improvement in lung function. The lungs begin to clear the mucus more effectively, so the patient who suffered from a chronic smoker's cough will begin to quit it.

Within the first nine months without smoking, the benefits are already felt in a significant physical way. A decade after quitting, the risks continue to decrease. The risk of lung cancer, the deadliest disease associated with smoking, is cut in half compared to an active smoker. The risk of pancreatic cancer, which is significantly higher in smokers, is reduced to the same level as that of a person who has never smoked.

At the 15 year point without smoking, the damage was almost fully restored.
