“This attack is a serious mistake, we are sorry for the harm”

The Chief of Staff, Lt. Col. Hertzi Halevi issued a statement tonight (Wednesday) following the incident of injury to WCK international humanitarian aid workers in the Gaza Strip and explained that “the serious incident is the result of misidentification in complex conditions – at night during a war. It shouldn't have happened. We will complete the investigation in the coming days, learn from the conclusions and implement them immediately”

In his announcement, the Chief of Staff said: “Seven of the workers of the global central kitchen were killed last night. WCK is an organization whose people work all over the world, and also in Israel, to perform good deeds in complex places. The IDF works in close cooperation with the World Central Kitchen organization and greatly appreciates their important work. We have completed a preliminary investigation on the matter. I want to say clearly – there was no intentional attack against aid workers of the WCK organization. The difficult incident is the result of misidentification in complex conditions – at night during a war. This should not have happened.”

The Chief of Staff added: “The initial findings have now been presented to me here at the Southern Command. I visited the new humanitarian command headquarters that we established here today, in order to improve the way in which we coordinate the distribution of aid in Gaza. We will continue to act to protect international organizations that distribute humanitarian aid.”

The Chief of Staff clarified that “this attack is a serious mistake. Israel is at war with Hamas, not with the residents of Gaza. We regret the unintentional harm to WCK employees. We share in the grief of their families, as well as the grief of the entire World Central Kitchen Organization, from the bottom of our hearts.”

In conclusion, he said that “the Joint Chiefs of Staff's investigation mechanism will investigate the incident thoroughly. We will complete the investigation in the coming days, learn from the conclusions and implement them immediately. We will share, in full transparency, the findings of the investigation with the World Central Kitchen and other international bodies. We see great importance in continuing to provide humanitarian aid and we will continue to work to assist in this vital effort.”
