The firearms bill was finally approved in the Knesset

The Knesset plenum today (Wednesday) finally approved in second and third reading the firearms bill. Five Knesset members supported the proposal, one opposed and two abstained. In the bill, it is proposed to retroactively postpone the publication date of the order detailing the list of tools included in the definition of “firearm-like” by nine months, so that the order will be published until August 6, 2024.

Accordingly, it is proposed to postpone the expiration date of the ban on the import of “airsoft” type weapons, as long as the order does not enter into force or up to 18 months from the date of commencement of the Firearms Law, whichever comes first. It is also proposed that the beginning of this amendment will be on November 6, 2023.

The explanation for the proposal reads: “In light of Operation Iron Swords and the state of war in which the State of Israel finds itself, which directly affects the work of the Ministry of National Security, including the activities of the Division for Licensing and Inspection of Firearms in the Ministry, as well as the work of the Israel Police, it was frozen, with “After the outbreak of hostilities, the work of the headquarters to formulate a list of types of “firearm-like” to which the arrangement will apply, and the work of the headquarters to prepare the wing for the entry into force of the permanent arrangement was also frozen.”
