The countries signed a security memorandum of understanding

Iran and Russia today (Wednesday) signed an important security memorandum of understanding, designed to deepen the military and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian and his Russian counterpart Nikolai Petrushev on the sidelines of a security forum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

According to official reports, as part of the new memorandum of understanding, “the level of relations and cooperation between the two countries will increase in various strategic areas.” That is, Iran and Russia are expected to increase their military, security and strategic cooperation.

The step comes against the background of the close relations between the countries and the close coordination between them in the Russia-Ukraine war. Iran previously supplied drones to Russia for the war and the two held joint military exercises.

As part of the meeting in St. Petersburg, he also met with the national security adviser in Iraq, Qassem Muhammad Jalal al-Araji. At the meeting, Ahmadian and Al-Araji reviewed the implementation process of the Iran-Iraq security agreement and agreed to organize a meeting of the relevant committees as soon as possible.

Earlier today Ahmadian presented proposals to ease the impact of “Western unilateralism on information security” and supported “multilateralism of international institutions and structures dealing with information security”.

On the other hand, Petrushev promised that Russia “will continue to work for a just world order that meets the interests of most countries and is based on equality and respect for the diversity of cultures.”

The signing of the memorandum of understanding reflects the close alliance between Iran and Russia and their attempt to lead a “new world order” under their leadership.

“Moscow is happy that its position is well accepted by most of the countries, whose representatives are participating in the meeting in St. Petersburg today,” said a senior official of Russia's security services.
